This is not the first time Brosnan has said he is bidding farewell to Bond. Indeed, at 51, the Irish actor seems set to rival Sinatra in clocking up farewell performances, yet in the past Bond has kept drawing him back in - even now, the industry is uncertain whether Brosnan has really decided to hang up his gun, or set up a Mexican standoff between himself and Eon Productions, which produces the Bond films

As recently as May, producer Barbara Broccoli had assured Brosnan that he would star in at least one more Bond movie, saying that Brosnan’s comments about the heavy reliance of the last Bond picture, Die Another Day, on special effects rather than plot will not be held against him.

At least one friend of Brosnan has suggested that it is not money but hurt feelings that have led the actor to declare that the world of Bond is not enough. Brosnan has felt his contribution to revitalising an ailing franchise has been downplayed, and that he has not been given his due for conquering a role that had once been indelibly linked with its originator, Sir Sean Connery.

Brosnan’s inner resources seem substantial, and should Bond slip away from him this year, he seems more than able to deal with it. Ten years ago, he was already thinking of a future after the Bondwagon finally rolled by: "I’d like to come out of it all with a career intact, with other strings to my bow - as a producer, maybe a director," he said. "And for professional reasons, I’d really like to keep that licence to kill."

Hes playing Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four. He wouldnt make a terrible Bond though either. But I stand firmly with Ewan.

Clive Owen: I don't think about it. I really don't think about it. I think Pierce Brosnan has been fantastic, reinvigorated the franchise, made a fortune. As far as everyone knows, he's doing the next one and they should come out and back him because he is James Bond. He's the man.

i agree that julian mcmahon should be the next bond.
he is the perfect fit - both looks wise and he can play that type of suave yet arrogant personality, although his accent isn't british

Julian McMahon just looks like a guy who could play Bond. And he can work on the accent. Although I am a bit sceptical on the whole idea of replacing Pierce Brosnan when he just had a Bond movie come out. He didn't start playing Bond until like 20 years (it seems) after Roger Moore was Bond. But I guess it was the same story with Changing from Connery to Moore. So I think that it would be alright.

The New James Bond

Speaking as someone from England who knows what an English accent should sound like, I would have to cross off both Colin Farrell (Irish) and Russel Crowe (terrible English accent).

Jude Law would be OK, although I think he is almost too good to let himself get typecast. Clive Owen would be a good option, and then of course there is always Orlando Bloom, but he's probably too young. Ralph Fiennes would be good too.

How about Roger Moore? He may be old, but he's still one kick-ass actor. It'll be a "flashback" or something like that.

I agree with mi6

Clive Owen is currently the best brit out there to take over for 007. Hands down he would be the best guy to take the martini from Piece and carry on the franchise and breathe a little life back into it after the last two stinkers.

But that's just my opinion...
