Idlewild
Just a post to say that I really liked the energy in this movie. The intro in black/white, the animated musical notes/rooster, and the dancing was the greatest. The idea of the nightclub called the church was hilarious to me (a minister), as the symbolism of a hypocrite church was all there - money grubbing preacher, the other one taking his cut, somebody stepping out with another woman, someone waiting in the wings to take over, assasination of character-gossip and murder being on equal planes, etc.
The movie was very similar to the story of W.C. Handy in the movie classic The St. Louis Blues, with Nat King Cole, Pearl Bailey, Ruby Dee, Cab Calloway, Mahalia Jackson, and Eartha Kit. Still, anyone who finally picks up for him/herself, use their talents, and live their own life instead of living for wants of others was portrayed well in Idlewild. In Idlewild, Angel ends up dying because she was trying to be someone other than herself, and the stress it caused (in the wrong place at the wrong time), whereas Handy went temporarily blind from the stress.
All in all, I thought it was a good movie. Too bad the people in the real city of Idlewild didn't take the opportunity to use this movie for their own advantage.
